We were commissioned by Lorne Stewart on behalf of Cornwall County Council, working with Gwella Contracting.
Another of the Cornish farm estate; Bowden Farm had holes in it’s HDPE liner and these were leaching slurry beyond the bund and into the nearby field, which had a nearby brook.
Already, the Environment Agency’s awareness of problems in the area – slurry leakage and/or POPs, and potential fines, were making this a huge headache for the farmer.
As part of an inspection visit to Neydown and Coosewartha Farms, we visited to quote for repair. Unfortunately, the day of quoting, the Farmer was in the middle of TB testing and, understandably, distracted almost to tears. We backed off, telling him we would return tomorrow to his obvious relief.
Next day? Mark returns, farmer is much more relaxed and we go to look at the damage. Two holes. All Turtle teams carry a basic level of repair material on-board for most eventualities, and with the farmers’ help, we were able to patch repair this damage within an hour. Whilst EPDM needs up to 48 hours to cure, this was felt the best solution, much to everyone’s relief.
The farmer has been left with our card for future problems, with hand-shakes all round for a problem averted. We look forward to dropping in to see him again later in the year when we return for quoted work.
