Liner Services: Flood Alleviation
suDS Rainwater Harvesting
Rainwater Harvesting across the UK for our planet.
Climate change is requiring us all to consider both how we use water, but manage it too. No longer can we afford to let rainwater run un-controlled into existing water courses – we need to manage it and to this end, all new housing estates, commercials properties and roadways feature attenuation ponds as a minimum.
With the price of water supply ever increasing, why not harvest this free water? As water resources become scarcer due to climate change, it becomes both economically and environmentally sensible to explore SuDS harvesting of free rainwater runoff from buildings and greenhouses for gardening or grey water applications.
What are SuDS?
In natural environments, rain generally falls on surfaces that are permeable, allowing it to soak away into the ground – a process called infiltration. In urban areas where many surfaces are sealed (tarmac, driveways, buildings), this infiltration is limited. So, drainage systems (culverts, underground pipe network) divert rainfall to local watercourses and, thus, downstream. With our climate-change increased-rainfall and ever-growing urban environments, this is leading to more flooding events.
How does SuDS work?
SuDS essentially operate through infiltration where possible and attenuation combined with slow conveyance. By temporarily holding back these rainfall events and then slowly releasing it (attenuation), we can help to mitigate flooding. This can start from the capture of greenhouse roof water via a water butt through to multi-acre industrial parks and attenuation ponds.
Attenuation ponds then slowly release the stored water back into watercourses at a decreased, controlled rate which improves water quality. Vegetated beds and swales within attenuation ponds can also remove pollutants and enhance local wildlife.
EPDM lining systems
EPDM membranes are the best product to contain water and can be folded, cut, glued and shaped to encompass any underground crate storage system. They are equally robust enough for outdoor tanks in the form of ponds, which may need more maintenance and, thus, human interaction.
EPDM is also impervious to sunlight, so can sit ‘dry’ for years unlike cheaper membranes. It is also a natural product, so doesn’t run the risk of pollution from breaking down into POPs, such as artificial materials like plastic. With a life span approaching 60 years, its initial cost becomes cost efficient when you consider re-working cheaper-membrane projects once, maybe twice during an EPDM’s life. It’s also repairable should you damage it – making this a one-off investment.
Why not see this life project which is now over 50 years old?
Rainwater harvesting
Rainwater Harvesting can come in the form of:
- Underground tanks – which can be created in any shape, size or volume on your property, or
- Attenuation ponds – which can be further developed to harness wildlife and nature.
SuDS and Rainwater Harvesting stored water allows you to recycle this free resource, starting from a rainwater butt and vegetable bed watering, to grey-water use within your property through to much larger, commercial scale projects.
Repairable membrane
Lasting up to 60 years, EPDM membranes doesn’t break, but it can become damaged – either through adverse interaction with the liner, maintenance or wildlife damage, like bird strikes.
Unlike cheaper membranes, EPDM membranes can be fully repaired whether it’s a puncture or tear, and that work can be warranted too, if undertaken by a qualified engineer.
Using EPDM repair processes and products, we can quickly restore the liner to a fully sealed system to maintain your water storage integrity. This ultimately saves you cost, interruption and down-time or inconvenience.
Turtle Productions offer a UK-wide Inspection and Repair Service:
- We can inspect and report on your installation
- We can then repair, or immediately repair any EPDM membrane, extending its life and saving the inordinate cost of replacement.
- Where required, we are happy to work either to you, an insurance company on your/their behalf or other interested parties as required.
- See our repair service for more information.
