You are here: Softwood decking
Bespoke softwood decking
Decking offers a great alternative and versatility to your outdoor living space, especially when a softer, more tactile surface is desired. Softwood decks are the normal go-to choice due to versatility, cost efficiency and ease of construction. Proper construction and regular maintenance can give you many years of enjoyment.

Scandinavian Redwood
We use Scandinavian Redwood deck boards for our projects, sustainably sourced by our friends and suppliers, Fountain Timber. Meeting the latest environmental standards, their softwood timber is pressure-treated to meet the needs of our demanding weather and use.
Our 20+ years of trading between Turtle and Fountain has supported each bespoke project, using industry-standard dimension timbers coupled with a fast, efficient and friendly service.
Latest pressure treatment processes will ensure the timber lasts in excess of 10 years. We apply ‘black jack’ paint to all upper carcass surfaces to extend that life, and the subsequent painting of deck boards after installation can further extend the life of your deck.

Decks can be curved, right?

By designing everything carefully and meticulously beforehand, we keep wastage to an absolute minimum, giving you great value for money. For a bespoke design, softwood decks are the best material for unusual shapes – decks don’t have to be square or rectangular, do they?
If you are considering a deck for your garden, it may need planning permission. Generally speaking, if a deck exceeds 30cm off the ground, or covers more than 50% of your garden (including out-buildings or existing extensions), planning may be needed. we always recommend checking for your peace of mind.
Hidden storage
Many decks are elevated and, once the exposed sides are clad, they can hide a great second-use space … underneath. See our Sanctuary deck in Bristol below to get a great example of how hidden spaces can be great for tidying up the garden, especially when younger family members have toys for daytime fun!
Careful construction and zero waste
Cost efficiency is not only key, but critical too in these modern times of price rises and emphasis on planetary resources.
All our timber comes from Fountain timber. It’s all great quality, structural and fit for purpose. we carefully design your deck to ensure that waste is virtually eliminated from the project. all construction is to industry-regulation, using the heaver-duty formulae of 150mm structural timbers set at 400mm centres, supported where necessary to stand the test of time. We paint all top surfaces of the support structure with Ducksback “Blackjack” paint to further protect and elongate the life of your investment.
All deck boards are individually screwed and, being industry standard pattern and dimension, are replaceable in the future should you ever damage one.
We ensure that all our constructions meet building and planning regulation for longevity and your piece of mind.
After deck servicing
So once your deck has been finished, that’s it, right?
Well, no, not really. Care of your deck (patio, lawn, pond) helps it to last longer and this can come in many forms. The most common form now, with modern materials, is to paint it. We use Cuprinol anti-slip deck paint in a variety of colours for this purpose. We can return annually to ‘maintain’ your deck if you desire – generally through inspection, pressure washing and an annual roller-coat of top-up paint – not unlike polishing the car?

Sanctuary Deck In Bristol
We visited this lovely family who were rapidly running out of room in the garden. New children tend to accumulate toys which didn’t fit their Scandinavian lifestyle of tidiness and order. Enter a compact sanctuary deck with hidden storage…

Change Of Lifestyle In Llantarnum
We were invited over to Llantarnum, near Newport in 2007 to bring about a change in lifestyle for this lovely family. The upper garden space was reasonably unusable, so we set about combining two fantasies in one – a large outdoor living space, and…

Deck And Koi Pond
Wow. Weren’t we looked after on this project in Cheltenham in 2005! The client, a chef (see pictures), loved his fish and they wanted to make better use of the space, bringing a new concept of the time to the garden – outdoor living.
All our work meets regulation and if planning permission is required, we can assist you with this.
